L’exposition explore le regard intime de Gabrielle Hébert, photographe amateure passionnée qui documente sa vie à la Villa Médicis et ses séjours au début du XXᵉ siècle. Pensée comme une immersion dans son journal visuel, la scénographie fait dialoguer des fragments de son journal intime avec ses photographies et guide une déambulation presque confidente, révélant ses émotions, ses doutes et sa fascination pour son mari, le palais et ses habitants.
Dès l’entrée, le visiteur est invité à franchir le seuil de la Villa pour déambuler dans un huis clos où l’image devient récit, un espace où l’histoire culturelle rencontre l’intime.
Les agrandissements de négatifs, fondus au mur, deviennent de vastes fenêtres ouvertes sur sa vie. On y découvre la force de sa pratique quotidienne — « Je photo » — et la poésie discrète d’une femme construisant patiemment la mémoire d’un lieu qui l’habite autant qu’elle l’observe.

The exhibition explores the intimate gaze of Gabrielle Hébert, an avid amateur photographer who documented her life at the Villa Medici and her many stays in Spain and Italy in the early 20th century. Conceived as an immersion into her visual diary, the scenography intertwines excerpts from her personal writings with her photographs, guiding visitors through a quiet, almost confidential journey that reveals her emotions, doubts, and fascination for her husband, the palace, and its inhabitants.
From the very first steps, visitors cross the threshold of the Villa and enter a contained, introspective space where images become narrative — a place where cultural history blends seamlessly with the personal.
Large-scale prints made from her negatives, softly merged into the walls, open up generous windows onto her world. They reveal the persistence of her daily practice — “I photo” — and the discreet poetry of a woman patiently building the memory of a place that shaped her as much as she observed it.
